ABOUT
Established in 1991, Long Island Traditions is a cultural arts nonprofit dedicated to promoting, supporting, and documenting the arts and lifeways of the many communities who live on Long Island.
Our program areas include singing, dance, and storytelling as well as costume and craft; educating and preserving architectural sites that tell the story of the people who build and maintain them; culturally responsive school programs in partnership with teaching artists; and grants to individual artists who are building on ancestral knowledge to create new work about life in their unique place and time.
We have developed permanent and traveling exhibits, historic preservation partnerships with local municipalities, and documentary films about maritime occupational life. We often work in partnership with area school districts and museums on a variety of cultural projects. Our work is based in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

VIOLET BARON
DIRECTOR
Violet joined us early 2024 as the Executive Director of Long Island traditions, following the retirement of our founding director Nancy Solomon. She holds dual M.A. degrees in Folklore and Media Studies from Indiana University.
With a background in multimedia reporting and public radio production, Violet specializes in community engagement and local storytelling with cultural context.
She previously worked for The Association for Cultural Equity and Traditional Arts Indiana, where she researched, documented, and produced podcasts about the folk and traditional arts of diverse communities both locally and internationally.
Violet is dedicated to preserving and sharing cultural heritage, both within its communities of origin and to the wider world. To that end, she has contributed projects to the Indiana Arts and Humanities Council and the American Folklore Society.

OUR TEAM
Adriana was our Communications Manager and now newly appointed Programs & Network Manager. She was born and raised in Ecuador, South America and moved to the U.S in 2014. She has been involved in the Arts & Culture from a very young age.
With her Business Administration degree and her Dance Teacher Certification she started working at a local non profit called Dancing Classrooms Long Island; which focuses on social emotional learning through the art of ballroom dancing.
Adriana was a teaching artist and marketing manager for them, gaining experience in locally-grounded cultural arts and community engagement that she brings to Long Island Traditions. She is very excited to help us with our mission, to recognize and raise awareness of Long Island's history and wide cultural diversity. We are thrilled to have her aboard!
