Workshops & Perfomances

We’re excited to share some of the meaningful projects we’re working on this season!

In partnership with our longtime friends at East Meadow Library, we’re co-hosting a Juneteenth celebration — a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S. Our longtime collaborator will perform with his band, The Elder Statesmen: African American Gospel, to honor and uplift his community’s heritage.

Programs & Services

Arts in Education

Long Island Traditions sponsors various arts-in-education programs that are supported by the NY State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The goals of these programs are to bring traditional artists into classrooms where students can enhance their understanding of history and traditions through in-class presentations and residencies, along with hands-on activities and field trips.

Community History, Place and Memory

1. CELL PHONE TOURS

LI Traditions and TravelStorys have created a series of self-guided cell phone tours around NY State.

Maritime Folk Arts in Education

The goals of this 4th-grade program include teaching students about a traditional occupation, family and community traditions, and educating teachers on folklife resources in the community. Because the maritime traditions are rapidly vanishing from Long Island, it is critical that students learn about these resources before they disappear. The program is offered in class and remotely.

Grants for Artists

At Long Island Traditions, we’re proud to support local artists through grant opportunities that help preserve and share traditional cultural expressions. We offer funding for master artists to teach their craft to apprentices, as well as project support for artists representing maritime, cultural, and occupational traditions rooted in Long Island’s diverse communities. Learn more about our grant programs and how to apply by contacting us at info@longislandtraditions.org
