of Holdings
Long Island Traditions holds approximately 500 recorded interviews and 10,000 photographs of traditional folk artists and community members that examine a wide range of subjects including:
- Maritime Culture
- Farmers
- Bay Houses
- Summer bungalows at West Meadow Beach
- African-American quilting and gospel music
- Trinidadian steelband
- Jewish life on Long Island
- Traditional music of Latino immigrants
- Great Neck Plaza history
- Broad Channel history and Labor Day Parade
Recorded interviews are part of our documentation programs on area traditions and artists. The interviews are available for listening at our offices. Currently LI Traditions is converting the interview tapes into digitized files, as a result of a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
Making an Appointment
To make an appointment call or send a letter stating the nature of your research, an address and phone number where you can be reached, and the best time to reach you. Requests must be submitted at least 1 month in advance of desired date.
